A liturgy
For divorce.
You sit down. The house is the wrong shape now, and it is also exactly the shape it is.
Begin here.
The chair. The breath. The fact that you are still in this room, even now.You are allowed to grieve a thing
you are also choosing to end.Name what is true today.
Not the tidy version. The one underneath.I am relieved.
I am devastated.
Both of these arrived in the same hour.
Let both be true.Do not solve it yet.
Do not decide what it means yet.
Do not make it a story before it has finished being a Tuesday. You are allowed to be unsure.
You are allowed to be sure, and still be sad.
You are allowed to ask for one small thing —
sleep tonight. dinner. the strength to make one call. When you stand up, drink water.
The ending is still here. So are you.
That is the whole prayer.Amen, quietly.
